Fashion model and “genetic lottery winner” Cameron Russell’s TEDTalk presentation was a thought-provoking account of how the fashion world manipulates and manufactures unobtainable — and ultimately damaging — images of beauty to women.
It left me thinking, Man, you heteros have it easy.
You see, something similar has been happening to gay men, but with a twist. In our world, it’s not just models who are expected to rip off their clothes and expose themselves to the gaze of everyone within eyeshot. It’s all of us — even those of us who are, well, not quite lottery winners.
And we don’t rely on a phalanx of professional image-makers. My gay brethren have perfected the art of self-portraiture in bathrooms across America. In these tiled photo studios, we play the role of stylist, model, photographer, and retoucher. The “shoot” goes something like this: we stand in front of the mirror, lift our shirt, flex our pecs, suck in our gut, position the camera so that our faces aren’t in the frame, and start snapping.
Where do these faceless pictures end up? Not on the pages of a glitzy fashion magazine. Instead, when we’re done pulling a Weiner (as in Anthony, D-NY!), these shots get uploaded to our Grindrs, Jack’ds, or any one of the other countless gay dating apps lurking in our smartphones. There, amid a sea of bite-sized photos, we lie in wait, hoping that someone will find our nipple or shoulder sufficiently tantalizing and strike up a conversation with us.

On last Friday’s Generations Radio, Pastors Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner warned that the gay population is about to rise dramatically as a result of “breakdown of the family” and will spread over America like a flesh eating virus.
As Buehner explained, feminism made women distrust men. As a result, boys lack a father and become gay, while girls venture into “amateur prostitution” and use men for “a good roller coaster ride” until eventually heading “into lesbianism.” He predicted that the gay population is “going to skyrocket.” Swanson agreed that we have a “humongous problem on our hands.”
Responding to Rep. Paul Ryan’s endorsement of same-sex adoption and Pastor Mark Horton’s openness to supporting same-sex domestic partnerships, Swanson derided “the ecclesiastical leaders and the civil leaders” who “will not acknowledge that we are under the judgment of Almighty God.”
“The body itself is shot through with this disease and it is occasionally busting through in these sores called homosexuality and these sores seem to be spreading all the time,” Swanson said, “They are taking these sores and they are carving happy faces into them, they are calling this sore ‘gay’ and they are carving happy faces into them, they are making it appear to be a wonderful, wonderful thing that we have these sores breaking out.”
Buehner elaborated on the analogy, calling homosexuality a “nasty flesh eating virus” that is spreading “all over the body” and lamenting that political and religious leaders who support gay rights are like “shepherds leading the sheep to death.”

Buehner: Women don’t trust men, women raise sons, sons don’t trust men, but there’s a hole in their heart, looking for a man, looking for the love of men, they’re not getting the love of their father, they’re going to go seek it out in other men, i.e. male homosexuality. A woman does not have a trust in a man, she didn’t see a loving relationship with a man, she’s been taught that husbands are buffoons and that at best get yourself a man who is a good roller coaster ride for the night, maybe try and get a few bucks off of him doing the amateur prostitution thing but move on, keep your independence from the family and from the man and ergo why not just go ahead into lesbianism.
Now homosexuality and lesbians start building on each other and snowballing. I believe that we are at the knee of the curve here, in other words, the rate of homosexuality in society has been fairly low, it’s been in the low one percent, two percent, we’ve always had some but it’s been low, I think it’s going to skyrocket in the next decade.
Swanson: It certainly does have a good sales program, the brochures are as glossy as they can possibly be, they are being sold in public schools all over America and it’s very possible this thing can go hyperbolic in the next couple of five to ten years, I wouldn’t be surprised at all, especially with the breakdown of the family, and we have two to three to four times more kids raised outside of a nuclear family as they were even in the last generation twenty years ago. We’re continuing to see a breakdown and what a lot of our leaders don’t want to recognize is that we’ve got a humongous problem on our hands.
It’s not like this car’s been through an accident and has got a few nicks on the bumper; the steering wheel is in the trunk, the steering wheel is in the trunk, this thing has been accordioned all the way from the hood into the trunk and we’ve got a major civilization accident on our hands and it’s going to take something really serious, something radical in order to repair this. It is probably going to have to be repentance, that is we’re going to have to repent of a lot of things and a lot of fundamental problems.

What guys like Paul Ryan are doing, what the politicians are doing with their approval of civil unions and homosexual marriage is that they are taking these sores and they are carving happy faces into them, they are calling this sore ‘gay’ and they are carving happy faces into them, they are making it appear to be a wonderful, wonderful thing that we have these sores breaking out and this is precisely what’s happening with our church leaders and civil leaders that are constantly wanting to endorse homosexual marriage. The fact that you have Mike Horton from the White Horse Inn endorsing civil unions as a possible way in which we can love our neighbor is again an ecclesiastical leader of the Reformed stripe saying this is cool, put the sore into a smiley face, it is okay, we are going to put the stamp approval of the civil magistrate on this thing, and the ecclesiastical leaders and the civil leaders are doing the same thing with it because they will not acknowledge that we are under the judgment of Almighty God.
Buehner: Putting the smiley face is part of the picture, they are trying to make it look happy, make it look fun, call it gay, but what they are also doing is they are spreading it. They are taking this disease that’s ravaging the body, it’s more like that nasty flesh eating virus and they are spreading it all over the body, they are spreading the virus all around because it’s so good, it’s a nice, happy virus, you want this flesh eating virus on your neck, you want it on your check, you want it on your back, you want it on your legs. They are doing everything they can by not only giving it a warrant it doesn’t deserve from Scripture but they’re also funding it, they’re also propelling it. This is horrible; this is the shepherds leading the sheep to death.

Bay Area Reporter (San Francisco) (04.11.13):: Seth Hemmelgarn
George Gascón, San Francisco’s district attorney (DA), has agreed to a permanent ban on the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution. He notified Theresa Sparks, executive director of the city’s Human Rights Commission, of this decision in a letter dated March 30, which stated that prosecutors will no longer use condoms as physical evidence in criminal prostitution cases. Jeff Adachi, public defender, agreed that it is a good policy that police and prosecutors will no longer treat carrying condoms as evidence of prostitution. This letter ended a temporary ban on collecting or photographing condoms in cases of suspected prostitution or of discussing them in court, which was in effect since October and had been extended for another three months in January while Gascón examined the issue.
Sex worker advocates, public health officials, and others were concerned that using condoms as evidence of prostitution discouraged people from carrying them and thus placing individuals at greater risk of HIV and other STDs. In his letter, Gascón referred to the need to balance health and safety issues. He acknowledged that concerns raised in two meetings with the Human Rights Commission have persuaded him that police seizure and trial prosecution using condoms as evidence make it less likely that sex workers will carry and use condoms to protect themselves. After six months of evaluating police arrests and the case outcomes, Gascón felt confident that the public safety concerns can be addressed without risking sex workers’ health.
Sparks referred to the agreement between the DA and public defender as a huge advancement. She was happy that the victims’ rights have been placed before law enforcement and commented that officials needed to remind people that many in the sex industry are victims who should receive the option of protection while participating in these activities. Sparks stated that the next step was to get the message to the community so that individuals understood that the change is real as well as their rights. A meeting with advocates and city agents is planned to determine how to spread awareness of the new policy. Sparks noted that her staff, representatives from the city’s health department and the nonprofit St. James Infirmary all participated in the effort to address the condom issue.

As someone who has struggled with labels, both those I’ve put on myself and those that academic, national and cultural groups attempt to put on me either for funding, bio medical or simply because of an innate urge to quantify widgets.. this was a powerful reminder to those in power, research and policy that labels don’t tell you who we are – they just tell you how we are counted.

Last week was LGBT Health Awareness Week, the one week set aside each year to stress the importance of LGBT health. Coincidentally, most of our community was awash in a sea of red and pink equal signs on Facebook to show their solidarity for marriage equality. Given the historic nature of the arguments, this was all well, good, and necessary, but raises the question for all of us: Where do we stand when it comes to our health equality?

An Italian scientist is aruging that vaccinations produce homosexuality. Gian Paolo Vanoli, a 70-year-old scientist, journalist and opponent of vaccinations, says that vaccines make people gay. Vanoli, who’s a proponent of alternative medicine, recently spoke with Vice Italy’s Matthew Lenardon about his ideals. Via a Huffington Post translation of the Vice interview:
The vaccine is introduced into the child, the child then grows and tries to find its own personality, and if this is inhibited by mercury or other substances present in the vaccine which enter the brain, the child becomes gay. The problem will especially be present in the next generations, because when gays have children, the children will carry along with them the DNA of their parent’s illness. Because homosexuality is a disease, even though the WHO has decided that it is not. Who cares! The reality is that it is so. Each vaccination produces homosexuality, because it prevents the formation of one’s personality. It is a microform of autism, if you will. You will see how many gays there will be in the next generation, it will be a disaster.
Despite these views, Vanoli insists he supports same-sex marriage and gay adoption. He doesn’t “blame” gay people for their “illness,” just as he wouldn’t blame someone who “suffers from cancer or a heart attack,” he told GayStarNews. “But we have to say that it’s an illness, something that does not respect the order of life,” he told the outlet. “One of the main causes is represented by vaccines, which go against life, disturbing our mind and our spirit. The proof of that is the big increase in the number of homosexuals. Since mass vaccination began, this is the result.” Some of Vanoli’s arguments, however, have been disputed for more than 30 years. In 1975, for example, the American Psychological Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, citing that “research has found no inherent association between any of these sexual orientations and psychopathology.” The APA goes on to say that “no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors.” Gay rights in Italy continue to lag. Same-sex marriage is not legal in the country, and at least one top politician has publicly likened it to supporting pedophilia.
